Skills Required:
- Strong experience developing and maintaining WordPress websites
- Good knowledge of modern PHP, preferably PHP 8+
- Experience building custom WordPress themes and plugins
- Experience with Gutenberg / the WordPress Block Editor
- Good knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, and modern CSS
- Experience with REST APIs and third-party integrations
- Good understanding of MySQL and SQL
- Experience using Git collaboratively and working across development, staging and production environments
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills

X Consulting is hiring a Software Engineer to join the Engineering team of a leading pan-African digital media company. You will help build, maintain, and improve high-traffic digital products, websites, internal platforms, and tools used by large audiences across Africa. The role suits an engineer who is comfortable with WordPress and PHP but also enjoys building beyond traditional website maintenance, including APIs, integrations, reusable components and new digital products.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and maintaining features across digital products and high-traffic websites
- Developing custom WordPress themes, plugins, Gutenberg blocks, templates, APIs and integrations using PHP, JavaScript and WordPress APIs
- Working with Product and Design teams to turn requirements and designs into working software
- Developing websites, landing pages, event platforms and other digital experiences
- Diagnosing and resolving frontend, backend, database, caching and production issues
- Improving performance, reliability, security and maintainability
- Taking part in code reviews, sprint planning, testing, deployment and retrospectives, using Git and CI/CD pipelines
- Maintaining and upgrading existing applications, dependencies and WordPress installations
- Collaborating with Editorial, Growth, Commercial, Events and Research teams, and owning projects through to deployment
