African tech startups raised $582.8 million in the third quarter of 2026, making it the strongest quarter for startup funding on the continent so far this year and increasing the possibility that 2026 could surpass last year’s funding total.

A total of 58 startups secured funding between July and September, according to data from Disrupt Africa’s 11th annual African Tech Startups Funding Report.

The figure represents a 70 per cent increase from the $342.2 million raised by African tech startups during the same period in 2025.

Q3 Reverses Second-Quarter Slowdown

The strong third-quarter performance comes after a weaker second quarter had raised concerns about the direction of African startup funding.

In Q1 2026, 40 startups raised $382.15 million, suggesting that the year could at least match or surpass 2025.

However, funding slowed significantly in Q2, when 38 startups raised approximately $260 million.

The sharp rebound in Q3 has now changed the outlook, with both the number of funded startups and total investment increasing substantially.

2026 Funding Reaches $1.39 Billion

So far this year, 137 African tech startups have raised a combined $1.39 billion.

If the current pace continues through the final quarter, the ecosystem could end 2026 with approximately 182 funded startups and $1.85 billion in total investment.

That would represent an improvement over 2025, when approximately 178 startups raised $1.6 billion.

It would also mark another year of growth for an ecosystem that has faced significant funding challenges since the global capital slowdown.

African Tech Funding Continues to Recover

African tech startup investment increased by almost 50 per cent to $1.64 billion in 2025, signalling an early recovery from the global funding shortage that affected startups across the continent.

The sector had previously experienced a sharp decline in investment, falling to $1.12 billion in 2024 as the global funding winter weighed heavily on venture capital activity.

The latest figures suggest that the recovery could be becoming more sustained.

However, funding remains below the levels recorded during the sector's peak years.

African startups raised approximately $3.33 billion in 2022 and $2.4 billion in 2023, meaning projected 2026 funding would still be considerably lower than those highs.

African Technology Ecosystem Gaining Strength

The third-quarter performance is significant because it comes after concerns that the African technology ecosystem could experience another decline in funding following the slowdown recorded in Q2.

If the current trajectory continues, 2026 could become the second consecutive year of increased investment following the 2024 funding low.

That would provide stronger evidence that African technology startups are gradually emerging from the global funding winter.

For founders and investors, sustained growth in funding could also improve access to capital for startups developing solutions across sectors such as fintech, healthtech, mobility, agriculture and other technology-driven industries.

While the continent remains some distance from its 2022 funding peak, the latest numbers point to a gradual strengthening of Africa’s startup investment ecosystem.
