Microsoft Reworks Windows 11 Search for Faster, More Useful Result

Microsoft is testing a redesigned version of Windows Search that aims to make finding information on Windows 11 quicker, cleaner and more responsive.

The overhaul targets one of the operating system’s core features, introducing a new interface, faster performance and improved understanding of what users type into the search box.

The changes are currently being tested rather than released as a final Windows 11 feature.

A simpler search experience

The redesigned interface is built using WinUI 3, Microsoft’s modern framework for Windows applications.

According to Anshul Rawat, corporate vice president of the Windows product team, the new experience has been designed with speed as a central priority.

“This new Windows Search experience is built for speed.”

Microsoft says early testing has produced significant improvements in both performance and memory usage, suggesting that the redesigned search is intended to become more capable without adding unnecessary resource demands.

The interface also features faster animations and a larger preview area for results.

Results appear directly inside Search

One of the most noticeable changes is how Windows presents information.

Rather than requiring users to wait for a web-style result page to load, the updated Search experience can display certain answers directly within the interface.

For example, a query asking for an actor’s height could produce the information inline instead of presenting what essentially amounts to a small Bing search page.

The approach is similar to the quick-answer search experiences already familiar to users of smartphones and other modern operating systems.

Microsoft improves how Search understands queries

The redesign is not limited to appearance and speed.

Microsoft is also working on the underlying search technology so that Windows can better interpret what users mean when they enter a query.

The company says improvements include better recognition of spelling mistakes and synonyms.

That means users may be able to find what they need even when their search terms are misspelled or differ from the wording used in the information they are looking for.

Early testing shows performance gains

Microsoft says initial testing has demonstrated substantial improvements in performance and memory consumption.

The company is presenting the changes as part of a wider effort to modernise some of Windows’ longstanding core experiences.

Tom Warren of The Verge, who tested the new interface at Microsoft’s Windows and Surface event, described the experience as noticeably quicker and less cluttered.

The changes could therefore address two longstanding expectations for desktop search: speed and simplicity.

What the redesign means for Windows 11 users

Search is one of the most frequently used tools in Windows, helping users locate applications, files and settings as well as information from the web.

Making the feature faster and more capable could reduce the number of steps users need to take to find basic information or launch tasks.

However, Microsoft has not indicated that the redesigned experience is already available to every Windows 11 user. It remains in testing, and features shown during development can still change before a wider rollout.

If Microsoft delivers the improvements as currently demonstrated, Windows Search could become a more integrated part of the Windows 11 experience rather than simply serving as a gateway to files, applications and web results.
