Skills Required:
- Ability to build a picture of an industry from fragmented sources (market size, value chain, key players, key metrics)
- Strong writing: clear, structured, precise profiles for investors
- Comfort with structured data and spreadsheets, and discipline in following schemas and SOPs
- Curiosity about AI-assisted research, including directing, reviewing and correcting LLM output
- Fast learning across unfamiliar industries
- Research, financial data analytics, and writing
Preferred: Bachelor's degree or higher in economics, finance, business, or a related field; depth in sectors relevant to African private capital (energy, financial services, consumer, agriculture, telecoms, healthcare); multi-market African research experience; hands-on experience with AI research tools or prompt writing; working knowledge of SQL or Python.

Stears is hiring a Data Associate to join its Intelligence Team and help build its library of industry profiles across 10+ African countries. You will own a set of industries (such as energy, financial services or consumer) and act as the go-to person for the data behind them. Collection runs through Stears' AI research engine, so your job is to direct, review, approve and enrich what the models produce. Your time will break down roughly as:
- Industry profile production (~50%)
- Quality assurance, validating figures against sources and keeping profiles fresh (~25%)
- Coverage expansion and workflow improvement (~25%)
You will report to the Data Operations Lead, pair day-to-day with the existing industry analyst, take research direction from the Head of Research, and work closely with the engineering team. The role suits people who are comfortable with ambiguity and fast-changing priorities.
