If I am to start from scratch in Nigeria today, which digital skill has the fastest path to earning income within 6 months?
This is a tricky question as there are many ways to look at it. But first of all, there is no single skill to earn the quickest in today's digital economy.
The reason is because of the changing economic situation in the world, and the rise of AI tools. If you asked this question 3 years ago, I might have said content writing, graphics design, etc. But today, AI tools have seriously invaded many of these skills.
So, as a beginner, if I tell you to learn content writing, you will be battling with ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Gemini, Deepseek, and countless others. And you will have lost resoundingly as a beginner. The same thing for graphics design. These AI tools do an excellent job of many of these skills.
Of course, if you were to be really skilled in these 2 examples I brought, and you know how to prepare case studies and sell yourself properly to clients, you should succeed despite the AI problem.
That's why this question is very tricky, as low effort skills simply means extreme and cut-throat competition - that's not even mentioning the millions of human competitors who are vastly and insanely skilled, compared to you.
So, what skill do I advise you to learn?
As of 2026, I won't recommend giving yourself a 6-month timeframe, as limiting yourself now because of a time frame can affect your income potential in the future.
Also, it isn't about the timeframe to learn a skill; it's about how dedicated you are towards learning that skill. It is also about how much excellent information you have.
However, if I were to say a particular skill that you can learn within 3-8 months and still be really good at, earn good money, whilst being very job-ready, and being able to easily prove your skill by creating multiple sample projects, there is only one answer that comes to mind as of today - things can change anytime!
AI Automation and Systems Implementation
You see, I worked in a company for years and worked with all sorts of freelancers, only for the company to replace almost everyone with AI tools. But the guys who were untouchable were the ones implementing those automations and AI solutions - no matter how wacky the work that those automations were delivering. These guys keep making big bucks despite the fact that the company keeps restructuring and firing people due to a supposed lack of funds.
However, you need to understand that if you truly want to build a long and sustainable digital career, you shouldn't pick a career just because of what's trending! Nope. You should be very careful and do thorough research on any skill before you choose it.
There are many niches that are far better than the one I just mentioned above, but the one that fits into your question the most is what I have answered.
Even niches like content writing, website development, video, graphics design, etc., that are battling serious competition from AI tools, if you know your onions, you are very skilled, and you know how to sell yourself excellently with excellent portfolios, case studies, resumes, cover letters, etc., you should do resoundingly well.
AI won't truly replace anybody - that's just a fantasy of CEOs and AI company founders; the reason AI has been causing people to lose their jobs is mainly because of the CEOs who are trying to cut costs and the AI company founders who are desperate to justify their crazy AI spending and valuations. Although, since CEOs are convinced AI is good enough, it is seriously causing people to lose their jobs. However, even if AI becomes much more powerful one day, it might only truly be able to replace those who don't know how to leverage and outcompete AI.
Also, there is almost no digital skill that AI won't disrupt - so the goal is to keep growing so that you won't get left behind by AI.
