I Discovered an Easy Way to Create Work Portfolios That Win Clients

So, you have finally managed to build some digital skills, but you know that before you can find good jobs, you need to have a work portfolio that can prove to clients that you are good. But, how do you create work portfolios and case studies that win clients? In this article, I will show you how!

You must have found several tutorials online teaching you about how to get it done. But more often than not, you would have realized that those tutorials didn’t help you much, and that could be for various kinds of reasons.

But, before we proceed, what is a work/job portfolio? It is simply a collection of several of your best work case studies compiled together to be displayed in one place/section. Basically, it is a place where you collate your best work in a single place to be displayed and shown to potential clients/hiring teams.

With that out of the way, let’s proceed.

Excellent Templates

Is there an easier way to know how to create work portfolios effectively and powerfully than seeing how high-income digital professionals in your niche do it?

You see, arguably the best way to master anything is to watch how the experts are doing it live. That’s why everyone wants to have successful individuals as mentors.

Creating work portfolios is really no different. But, there is a challenge! How do you find excellent portfolios of professionals in your niche? After all, professionals and high-income earners won’t be sharing their portfolios online for all to see!

Or… Maybe they are!

There is a platform where you can find it all—in fact, they have to share it publicly, and they also have to make it excellent.

On that platform, you can find thousands of various portfolio samples of high-income professionals in your field—all for free and openly displayed like a trophy.

That platform is Upwork!

And all you need to do to access all those portfolios is to have an Upwork account.

Once you have an account, search for the professionals in your niche via the search bar (and filter the search from “jobs” to “talent”). Please do this on a pc/laptop device.

Let’s say you are an SEO specialist (note that this is different from an SEO content writer). You should search for top talent in your niche. You should also use the Top-Rated Plus filter so that you will only see the topmost freelancers who are actively earning on the platform.

image 34

There are many other filters that you can choose from depending on what you want to see, but this is often enough, and you shouldn’t tinker with the other filters unless you know what you are doing. Also, you don’t need to filter by income after you have already filtered by Top-Rated Plus.

Once you have found your ideal targets, go to the portfolio section to view their portfolios. It is best to check multiple talent profiles so that you can have varying templates and ideas to model yours after.

Whenever you open any portfolio, you will find the date that they published the portfolio on the left side.

image 32

It is highly advised to model your portfolio after more recent samples. Old samples might not be the best ones to model your own case studies after! Samples between 2022- present are okay.

Also, old samples simply meant that those freelancers uploaded that way before they earned what they have earned today, which simply means they most likely didn’t publicly upload what they are really using as case studies today. In some niches, such as cybersecurity, for example, you can’t actually upload your actual portfolio for obvious security reasons. That’s why many top freelancers in cybersecurity either do not have any portfolio added or they have added an outdated, old, and irrelevant portfolio.

So, by the time you check out about 10 freelancers in your niche, you will have various ideas on how you can craft your own.

Tools You Need

Once you have seen excellent samples that you can model yours after, it’s time to get to work.

To create excellent portfolios and case studies, I will recommend 2 tools: an AI platform and an image editing/creation tool.

You can choose different tools of choice according to your own preference. But for this article, I will go with ChatGPT and Canva.

ChatGPT

Together with the expert case study samples that you have gotten from Upwork, it can also assist in guiding you step by step on how to craft work case studies suitable for your niche. I can try to explain, but the truth is, ChatGPT will do a better job in guiding, as stuff like that is from its core expertise. Also, each niche requires a specific kind of case study.

Ask ChatGPT to guide you on exactly what works best in your own niche and feed it with your work experience, successes, career details, Upwork profile samples you wish to model, etc., so that it can tailor the advice for you.

Just ensure you understand that you are the human and the one in control, not AI. Also, understand that it is just an excellent personal assistant, not your replacement, and you would be fine.

Canva

It is used to design the images needed. To create these excellent case studies, Canva Pro is the best tool I know. Even if you don’t have a Canva Pro subscription, as long as you are a new Canva user, you will be eligible for a free 30-day trial. You can always remove your payment details before the 30 days expire if you can’t afford it.

You can either design the images in 16:9 aspect ratio (e.g 1920×1080, 1200×628, etc) or square format (1080×1080, 1200×1200, etc).

Also, 16:9 is likely the better choice as it is the default format for presentations.

When you have chosen a design size, you will be shown your design area, where you can design your case study as beautifully as you want it to be.

In the template section, you can search for various case study design samples that you can choose from. Choosing a good design will make your case study look more refined and better.

However, don’t choose designs that are too flashy and off-putting. Also, understand that the content of the case study (which you will find many templates of on Upwork) is the most important aspect of a case study. Your KPIs, evidence, experience, etc., are what matter most.

However, if you have designed your case study in a 16:9 format and want to upload it to Upwork, you will need a square thumbnail, which you can also create in Canva.

It is not difficult. You can simply copy your first image from your original 16:9 designs and paste it into a new design, which is in square format.

By using my mouse to select and highlight all the elements on the first page, I can copy them.

Then, I simply pasted them here in the square-format design I created earlier.

Formats to download your designs from Canva

If you want to upload your case studies to the Upwork portfolio section, then download them in PNG/JPG formats. This will help you add them as images.

It is better to keep all your case studies in a single portfolio folder on Google Drive. If you already have the case studies stored in a folder on your PC or laptop, you can simply upload the entire folder to Google Drive at once. You can also update your Google Drive folder whenever you wish.

However, if you want to send them to clients as attachments or links, download them as PDF or PPTX files, or both. To turn your PPTX or PDF files into links, simply upload them to your Google Drive and place them in a portfolio folder.

If they are stored in your Google Drive, ensure that both the files and the folder are accessible to anyone with the link by adjusting the sharing settings accordingly.

How to Add Your Case Studies on Upwork

There are many ways to create case studies like the ones you see on Upwork. However, the most common choices among top talent are images, text blocks, and links. Images are the most popular option, followed by links. This is because images provide instant visual proof, while links are commonly used by writers, web developers, and other professionals to direct clients to their work online, making them a very convenient option.

Also, since the project description box only allows 600 characters, if you need an extra text area for a more detailed description, you can simply add a text area block in the “add content” segment.

You are also allowed to add many content – that’s why you can add each image one by one until it becomes a full case study. Each time you add a new image, the “add content” becomes available again, which allows you to add whatever extra content you wish to add.

Once you are done, you choose a thumbnail. You can either add one of the images/default thumbnails that Upwork shows you, or you can upload a new thumbnail image.  Then, you publish, and your case study and portfolio will be ready.

What if You Have No Work Experience?

One challenge many aspiring freelancers face is not having previous work experience to show potential clients.

The good news is that there are ways around this.

Not All Jobs Require a Portfolio

First, understand that not every freelance job requires strict proof of previous work. Some clients care more about your proposal, communication skills, understanding of their problem, and ability to explain how you will help them.

However, if you come across jobs where clients insist on extensive evidence, testimonials, or years of experience, you can simply skip those jobs for now and focus on opportunities that are more beginner-friendly.

Create Samples of Your Work

The second thing is to create samples of your work.

For example, if you are a writer, you can write articles and publish them on platforms like Medium, LinkedIn, etc. This gives you something tangible to show potential clients when they ask for examples of your work.

The same principle applies to most freelance skills. Create projects, personal samples, or demonstrations that showcase what you can do, even if they were not created for a paying client.

Over time, these samples become your portfolio.

Remember, clients want confidence that you can do the work. If you do not have previous client projects, your self-created samples can help fill that gap and make it easier to win your first opportunities.

The key is not to wait until a top-paying client hires you before building a portfolio. Start creating work now and use it to showcase your skills.

Volunteer Strategically

Another way to build experience is by volunteering your skills. By the way, you can also ask for a reduced fee – it could be average or a little, even if it is just to buy a data subscription. Volunteering doesn’t always have to be 100% free. Most should be willing to pay you a small fee as a token of gratitude.

You can help:

Local businesses

Friends and family

Community organizations

Religious organizations

Small startups

The keyword here is strategically.

Do not volunteer simply for the sake of volunteering. Volunteer when the project can help you gain practical experience and create a strong portfolio piece.

Document Everything

As you complete projects, save screenshots, results, feedback, testimonials, and before-and-after comparisons.

Many freelancers forget this step and later regret it. It has affected me badly in the past as a Meta ads professional.

Every project should leave behind evidence that can strengthen your portfolio. The more proof you have, the easier it becomes to convince future clients to trust you.

One well-documented project can sometimes be more valuable than many certificates.

Basically, there are so many ways to build a portfolio! So you really shouldn’t worry about not having a well-paying client yet. Everyone started from somewhere! Hopefully, you will also get there😊

So, after reading this, I hope you now know that creating a portfolio doesn’t have to be so hard. Also, I expanded on this in my Upwork course. You can check it out here
