Is it better to specialize in one tech skill or become a generalist?
I would highly recommend mastering a specific skill, and then also studying and understanding the surrounding skills that are in demand. This will make you much more valuable.
The ideal path is:
- Master one high-demand skill.
- Build real projects and gain experience.
- Expand into related skills that naturally complement your specialization.
This approach helps you become employable faster while giving you the flexibility to adapt as technology evolves.
Also, my biggest achievements as a freelancer has been from skills that are related to my core skill. There are so many times clients have hired me for a particular, highly specific job, then they later ask me if I could also do some related skills. If I could, that meant I kept on getting more jobs with that client.
So, master a specific skill, and have a solid understanding of the skills that surround that specific skill - especially AI-related skills that could supplement your worth in any skill you choose.
Clients are actively boldly saying on Upwork that they use AI in their workflow, so they are requesting freelancers to be able to also use AI tools in their workflow.
Apart from AI skills that relate to your skill, there are other non-AI skills that you would most likely need to understand, which will eventually make you much more valuable and also widen your chances to keep getting good jobs in the future.
Honestly, I am the kind of person that believes in learning several skills because at least if one doesn't work out, another would.😅
But, I actually learned something from your response. Its better to be very good in one particular field, while knowledge of other fields can serve as an added advantage.

@khayr-m Lols. I understand why you would want to do that. However, from experience ehn, it is much better to master one, and also know many surrounding skills - including complementary AI skills.
